The weather was moody in Franz Josef Glacier on the day of Joe & Pauls unforgettable proposal. Arriving from Queenstown, they drove out to meet the helicopter at the Glacier Country Helicopter base. One of them clearly had no idea what was about to happen—it was a surprise proposal! We ascended into the mountains with our pilot Mike from Glacier Country Helicopters and landed on the snow.
As the couple walked over to an area, I sneakily followed, ensuring that one remained blissfully unaware of what was to come.
Suddenly, Paul got down on one knee and popped the question to Joe, who said yes!
The joyous moment was celebrated with the helicopter pilot pouring a couple of glasses of champagne. We then captured several different photos in various snowy spots before taking off again. The sunny weather with patchy clouds created dramatic lighting against the mountainous backdrop. It felt amazing—everyone was happy, and you could see the love in the air. We flew back down over the Fox Glacier before heading back, forever marking this magical day in their memories.
And oh, that magical light! The sun seemed to understand its role in their story, casting a golden glow that bathed everything in warmth and beauty. It was a photographer’s dream to capture their love in such an ethereal setting.
The atmosphere throughout the day was one of joy and camaraderie. This warmth and openness translated into the most candid and heartfelt photographs. The bond between them was palpable, and their affection for each other illuminated every frame. It reminded me why I am so passionate about proposal and wedding photography—it's about preserving these genuine, love-filled moments that will be treasured forever.
It was one of those rare days that affirmed my love for what I do. Their story, the stunning location, and the people who shared in their joy—it all melded together to create a day of pure magic. Here’s to Joe and Paul, to their beautiful journey.
